Aleksandrovo Thracian Tomb

ALEKSANDROVO THRACIAN TOMB

After the discovery of the Kazanlak tomb in 1944 (currently under protection of UNESCO) the Aleksandrovo tomb is the second one with amazing frescos depicting humans figures from the Hellenistic Ages. The tomb is discovered in 2000 and is situated near the town of Haskovo. It was built in 4th century BC. The frescos represent religious rituals and hunting scenes.

BELOGRADCHIK ROCKS

Giant conglomerate, sandstone and limestone formations make up the Belogradchik rocks in fantastic shapes with scarlet, gray and buff colors. BOIANA CHURCH

The BoIana church is included in the list of UNESCO. The BoIana church is the most remarkable monument of the Bulgarian medieval painting art. At the same time it is one of the best preserved and interesting architectural monuments from the epoch of the feudalism. It was painted by a talented master from Boyana. The wall-paintings dates from 1259, and they are very precious and irrefutable contribution in the European art culture.

DEMIR BABA TEKE

The tomb of the famous saint Demir Baba is built over the ancient Thracian sanctuary. Demir Baba was a Turkish spiritual leader. The sanctuary is currently active and the combination between antique remains and actual rituals are unique.

Etara Ethnographic Museum

"ETARA" - ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM

The Etar open air ethnographic museum near the town of Gabrovo preserves the appearance and the spirit of the mountain villages and the manufacturing traditions of the Bulgarian National Revival period. The crafts (ancient or still alive) are applied in real life and holiday makers may participate in basket-making, hand-loom weaving, etc.

St. GEORGE CHURCHE IN SOFIA

It was built when Sofia was under the name of Serdica. It was then destroyed by the Huns, rebuilt and turned into a mosque by the Ottomans. Restoration work has revealed three layers of medieval frescoes, which had been hidden by plaster since the sixteenth century. Its frescoes were made by amateurs. According to the historians and archeologists those frescoes date to the middle of 10 th century and portray 22 prophets. Over the coupon there is a wreath - a symbol of the entireness. The impressive cupola bears a fourteenth-century portrait of Christ, surrounded by four angels. To the east lie excavated foundations of the Roman settlement of Serdica. Nowadays the church is a museum.

Goliamata Arsenalka Thracian Tomb

"GOLIAMATA ARSENALKA" THRACIAN TOMB

The tomb dated back to the 4th century BC. Very impressive is the stone made facade 5 meters in width in 2,5 meters in height. The facade hides two burial rooms. The second one is tholos and it is built by huge stone blocks. In the dromos (corridor), the archaeologists have discovered a horse skeleton.

"GOLIAMATA KOSMATKA" THRACIAN TOMB

This is one of the biggest Thracians tombs discovered in Bulgaria. The dromos (corridor) is 26 meters in length. The tomb is dated in 5th century BC. The archaeologists associate this place with the name of the Thracian king Sevt III. His bust is present among the burials gifts. The tomb is the richest one discovered in Kazanlak valley.

IVANOVO ROCK-HEWN CHURCHES

The Ivanovo churches are under the protection of UNESCO. The Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo are an integral part of the large monastery complex called “St. Michael the Archangel”, an exceptional spiritual and literary center of Bulgarian Medieval art. This complex was developed during the time of the second Bulgarian kingdom by church hermits. The 14th-century murals, rock-hewn churches, chapels, monasteries, monk’s cells, and unique mural paintings in the style of the Tarnovo and Constantinople School (14th century) survived to this day, having weathered the vicissitudes of history. Jaba Mogila

JABA MOGILA

The Bessi have arrived and have permanently settled down in this area during the middle of the last millennium. They are mentioned in the Greek chronicles as brave and freedom-loving warriors that worship Dionis. One of the most impressive historical monuments on the territory of Strelcha has been built in this period. Jaba Mogila is a unique Thracian religious complex composed of a tomb-mausoleum and a sanctuary-temple.

KAZANLAK TOMB

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanluk is under the protection of UNESCO. Discovered in 1944, this tomb dates from the Hellenistic period, around the end of the 4th century B.C. It is located near Seutopolis, the capital city of the Thracian king Seutes III, and is part of a large Thracian necropolis. The tholos has a narrow corridor and a round burial chamber, both decorated with murals representing Thracian burial rituals and culture. KOPRIVSTITSA

Koprivshtitsa originated as a settlement during the 14 th century. The wealthy and urbanized settlement was plundered and destroyed by fire by Turkish brigands three times and rebuilt from ashes to reach its greatest prosperity during the 19 th century when it had a population of nearly 12 000 inhabitants. Spacious houses, schools, churches fountains and bridges were built there during that period.

Ledenika Cave

LEDENIKA CAVE

The Ledenika cave was opened for tourists for the first time in 1961. In 1962 it was proclaimed for a natural landmark. Its altitude is 830 metres.
The temperature in the cave varies from -7oC to -15oC (in winter in the Antechamber) and to 8oC in the inner parts. The moisture of the air is 92%.
You can see only here the insect "Ledenikus" or "Lighthater". You can't see many plants here, just lichen and moss.

MADARA RIDER

The Madara rider is included in the list of UNESCO. The Madara Rider (Horseman) is a bas-relief dating back to the early middle ages and the only one of its kind in Europe. The sculptor carved the rock relief known as the Madara Horseman in the early 8 century, creating a majestic horse and a rider 23 m above ground level on an almost vertical cliff. The horseman is thrusting a spear into a lion lying at his horse’s feet. A dog runs after the horse. This incredible rock carving is a wonderful sample of the middle age art in Bulgaria. Magura Cave
Magura Cave

MAGURA CAVE

Magura cave is one of the miracles of Bulgarian nature. The cave disposes of 10 different in size halls and it is long 3 km. The cave-halls are enormous in size. Each one of them is over 200m long, more than 50m wide and over 20m high. Pearls of the cave are the unique paintings on stone, done in bat guano. They are multi layered and come from different epochs - The Epupaleolith, The Neolith, The Eneolith, the beginning of The Early Bronze Age.

MELNIK

During the first half of XIII century Melnik passed through a great political, economic and cultural upsurge, when despot Slav, a descendent of Assen dynasty ruler of the Rhodopes and Pirin mountain during 1209 turned the town into a capital of an independent feudal principality.

Mezek Thracian Tomb

MEZEK THRACIAN TOMB

It was a big beehive tomb, which probably belonged to a Thracian ruler. An interesting fact is that near the tomb was found a bronze statue of a wild boar from the second half of the IV th century BC. The wild boar is pictured in natural size on a jug of Rogozen and its fur is made like flames.

NESSEBAR OLD TOWN

The Nessebar old town is under the protection of UNESCO. The age-old town of Nessebar is situated on a rocky peninsula of the Black Sea coast line. One of the most ancient cities in Europe, it abounds in a great variety of architectural monuments dating back to medieval times. The small peninsula was a meeting place in bygone times: the twenty three ancient Christian churches of basilica type to beehive design bring back memories of the cultural and architectural heritage of Hellenic, Roman and Byzantine cultures. ODESSOS ROMAN BATHS

Situated in the south-eastern part of the present-day city of Varna (Odessos in the past), the Roman spa is the largest antique public building (over 7000 sq. m) ever discovered in Bulgaria. The architectural style and the coins found in this region suggest that the Roman spa buildings were constructed around the end of the 2nd century and the beginning of the 3rd century and functioned till the end of the 3rd century.

"OSTRUSHA" THRACIAN TOMB

The tomb is unique with its decoration, which is the combination of relief and frescos. The frescos represent portrait depictions, animals and plants. The building consists of four rooms and spreads over 100 square meters.

The ancient theatre in Plovdiv town is the most impressive building of Roman time that has come to us. Most probably the theatre had a capacity of 7000 spectators at the most. The names of the respective city quarters were chiseled on the benches in each sector. The two-level stage exhibits the architectural and decorative wealth of the building; top -quality materials and the artistic working unambiguously show the tremendous social importance attached to the city theatre. This is one of the oldest European towns contemporary to Troya and Mikena. It has been existed as a settlement about 8000 years ago, and became a town 3000 years ago during the Troyan war. RED CHURCH IN PERUSTITSA

The Red Church is one of the oldest Christian temples in Bulgaria. Built in 5th-6th century A.D., it is situated at the foot of the Rhodopi Mountains near the village of Pastusha. Its Byzantine-style construction still amazes you with the huge 15-meters-tall walls and the precise building work. There are frescoes on its archs, portraying saints, as well as Greek inscriptions.

RILA MONASTERY

The Rila monastery is under the protection of UNESCO. The Rila Monastery was founded in the first third of the l0th century by the Bulgarian monk St. Ivan of Rila - a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church, and his disciples. Rila Monastery is the second largest monastery on the Balkan Peninsula and one of the most skillful Bulgarian masters of the time took part in its establishment and building.

SERDICA

The Antiquity Serdica was fortified by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. The exact date of the building of the walls is known by one description. It says that the first wall of Serdika was built in the year of 192. Really interesting is the fact that the same description was found from the Western Gate. That's mean every one of the entrances of the fortress was obtained with the equal descriptions.

Shipka Church

It is rare that the tourists crossing the Rose Valley would not be tempted to turn north on the road from Kazanlak to Gabrovo, lured by the shining gold-plated domes of the Nativity memorial church or the sweet sound of its 17 bells. Rising majestically near the town of Shipka at the southern foothills of Stara Planina, it is one of the most sacred places for the Bulgarian people. A real pantheon of immortality, keeping the memory of the selfless feat of the Russian soldiers and the Bulgarian volunteers who died for the liberation of Bulgaria in the Russo-Turkish War 1877-78. Shipka Church

SHIPKA MONUMENT

The "Shipka" Monument of Liberty has been erected in memory of the thousands of Bulgarian volunteers killed in the battle here during the Russian-Turkish war. This event changed the history of the whole country. The shape of the monument reminds of a medieval battle tower. To get there, tourists should climb 894 stairs. The 31.5 m high monument has seven storeys; on the ground floor, under the central arch there is a marble sarcophagus which keeps the bones of the heroes, lost their lives in the battle. In 1996 in Thracian necropolis Shushmanets were discovered tree tombs. One of them is named after the "Helvetsia" foundation, with whose financial support were conducted the excavation there. The discovered tombs present many golden and silver finds and unique architecture.

This is the tomb of a Roman noble family, whose members lived during the 4th century AD, and was buried at Silistra. The tomb is decorated with polychrome wall paintings divided into upper and lower registers or pictorial zones, on the vault and on the walls themselves. The polychrome walls each show scenes from the life of the family. These scenes show a degree of realism which permits a detailed view of the Roman Danubian world.

SOZOPOL OLD TOWN

The city of Sozopol is one of Ancient Greece's oldest settlements formerly known as 'Apollonia Pontica' named after Apollo, the patron of seafarers. Today it resembles a cluster of welcoming century old houses dotted along the rocky headland, interspersed with small garden shrines. Sozopol provides the tourist with two fine, sandy beaches, set off nicely against the tranquil charm of fishing life. Sozopol is traversed by beautiful narrow lanes, old houses and its romantic charm has attracted artists and writers throughout the centuries.

STAROSEL

This is the largest Thracian Temple-tomb in the Southeastern Europe. According to the scientists, it dates back to the end of the V century and the beginning of the IV century BC and most probably is of Stalk, a Thracian ruler of the Odris Kingdom. Necropolis consists of eight mounds, each with different size. The tomb is made of stone blocks, fastened together by iron clamps, and covered with lead. It consists of a southern parade stairway, two laterals, a passage, a main font, two chambers -a rectangular and a circle one.

Svestari Thracian Tomb

SVESTARI THRACIAN TOMB

The Svestari thracian tomb is included in the list of UNESCO. This 3rd-century BC Thracian tomb is exceptional for the combination of sculpture, paintings, and architecture. The tomb has a unique architectural decor of painted murals and columns showing polychrome half-human half-plant figures. The 10 female figures carved in high relief on the walls of the central chamber and the crescent shaped decoration in its vault are the only examples of this type found so far in the Thracian lands. The funeral rites, the building technique, the architectural design, and the decoration, distinct from Hellenistic models, provide evidence that a Thracian ruler has been buried there. The finds from Svetitsa Thracian tomb were the greatest archaeological discovery for 2004. The golden mask found here is close to the famous masks known from Mikena. The mask depict a Thracian king Teres and date to the 5th century BC.

TATUL

The ancient Thracians' tomb mausoleum and sanctuary were made before Romans came to the Balkans. The tomb was completely hollowed out into a rock with a ritual stairway leading to it. Niches, solar circles and buildings are hollowed out.There is a whole complex of other images and constructions in the vicinity of the tomb: a ritual stairway on the tomb's lower part. Solar circles are hollowed out there, as well as ritual benches, where dead people's closest relatives lined up in silent respect; more niches in the rock, build-up constructions, and pythoses hollowed out into the rock, construction in complex's lower part. Trapezitsa Hill

Trapezitsa is the second important stronghold within the Old Bulgarian capital Veliko Tarnovo. In 12th - 14th sentries it was named "The glorious city Trapezitsa". The hill was defended by strong wall. The archaeological excavations here discovered seventeen churches with perfectly preserved wall-paintings and mosaics.

VRATSA ETHNOGRAPHIC COMPLEX

The main exposition of the complex is housed in the Revival school Ascension. It traces popular culture in Vratza district, its ethnic characteristics, the spirit of the epoch and the most typical livelihood in Vratza, the domestic occupations and the cultural and milieu traditions. A new approach has been taken to the arrangement and exposition of the ethnographic material.
