ABRITUS

One of the greatest battles in history between Roman troops and Gothic clans took place in 251 near the ancient Roman town of Abritus, close to the present town of Razgrad. Visitors can admire a great collection of statues of Gods and the late antique gold treasure comprising 835 gold cut coins in the Archaeological museum near the main entrance of the excavations.

APOLLONIA

The town is funded 2600 years ago by Greeks colonists came from Asia Minor. The town is named after the name of the God Apollo. In the beginning of 1st century AD the Romans conquered the city and destroyed it. In 4th century the town acquires the name "Sozopolis" - the city of Salvation.

ARMIRA ROMAN VILLA

Villa "Armira" was built in an area of 2200 sq. m. The main building of the villa was made from a rocks and it takes 1300 sq. m. The plan of the villa takes many and variable premises with official and business character. Most original of course are those that forms rich home of Roman Patrician with luxury baths and decorated pools. Very rich are floor mosaics in which harmonically are combined geometrical, vegetative zoomorph and anthropomorphic motives. Multi-color frescoes was covered the upper parts of the walls. AUGUSTA

The military camp of "ALA AUGUSTA" was built in the first 10 years of the 3 century AD, immediately before the first Gothic invasions. The first fortification of the camp was made of wood and soil. Later the camp was surrounded with a stone fortress. The preserved part of the western fortress wall with its three rectangular towers and the western gate were researched. It existed till 582, when it was destroyed by the Avars and was not restored any more.

AUGUSTA TRAIANA

The ancient forum of Augusta Trayana is one of the most significant monuments in the today’s city of Stara Zagora. Ruins of ancient public buildings with mosaics dating from 4th-6th century can be seen in the square in front of the Head Post Office in the city.

"BEREKETSKA" PREHISTORICAL MOUNT

The Bereketska settlement mount is the biggest one in Bulgaria. Its height is over 250 meters. The mount keeps the remains from Early Neolithic dwellings (6th millennium BC) until the Middle Ages. East from the village is discovered necropolis dated to the beginning of the Bronze Ages.

CABYLE

Cabyle ist a Thracian royal city. The name of the habitat originates from Cybela. The place of residence originated around the sanctuary at the end of the 2 mil. BC. The city was conquered by Phillip II during 342-341 BC. According to an inscription discovered in the city of Seuthopolis, the capital of the Odrysian ruler Seuthes III, Cabyle had a temple of Artemis Phosphoros and an Apollo's sanctuary.

DEULTUM

Debelt was founded by Emperor Vespasian as long ago as the II century, but during that time it was called Deultum and was within the borders of the Flavian military colony. The land of the village is also spread with Thracian mounds, but there is no historical background about the name of the settlement during that time.

"DIADOVO" PREHISTORICAL MOUNT

The settlement mount Diadovo
The first settlement here dated to the beginning of the Early Neolithic Ages. On this place one on top of the other were discovered layers from Cupper and Bronze Ages. The settlement continues to be used in Iron Ages and later - in Antiquity.

DIOCLETIANOPOLIS

At the end of the 3rd century in the area of the present-day town of Hissar, the Emperor Diocletian founded a town and named it after himself (Diocletianopol). It was the third biggest town in the province of Thrace in the 4th-6th century. The architecture of the town of Diocletianopol unveils the following attractions: a barrack complex, an antique theatre stage, Roman mineral baths, early Christian basilicas, beautiful palaces and villas for the Roman aristocracy, and the Roman tomb, famous for its original mosaic. DURANKULAK

Few people are aware that there, under the glinting waters of Lake Durankulak, lie - undamaged by time and the elements - the remains of the earliest stone architecture in continental Europe. Traces from a prehistoric settlement mound from the beginning of the 5th millennium BC have been preserved on the Great Island in the western part of the lake. In the opinion of scholars the find dated 7,000 years ago, gives a very clear idea about the culture of one of the most ancient proto-civilizations in the world.

DUROSTORUM

As an important Roman military center Durostorum was a significant river harbor, road junction, and customs station in the province of Lower Moesia. The first Roman military garrison at Durostorum was most probably composed of an auxiliary unit. After the Dacian Wars of emperor Trajan in AD 101-102 and 105-106, Durostorum was garrisoned by the legio XI Claudia. Detachments of that legion are epigraphically recorded in Montana in AD 136, as well as in the northern zone of the Black Sea.

Great Preslav

GREAT PRESLAV

The archaeological reserve Veliki Preslav (The Great Preslav) was the second capital city of the First Bulgarian Kingdom in the epoch of its supreme might and boom of the Old Bulgarian culture (the so called Golden Age). The Preslav literary school was established here and the famous Golden Round Church is renowned for its remarkable abundance of decorations in marble, gold, stone, painted ceramics, and colored glass.

The capital of Thracian tribe Geti is funded in the beginning of 1st millennium BC. It flourish in the Hellenistic Ages when is built the impressive city centre and the famous necropolis. In towns vicinities is discovered the Svestari tomb (under protection of UNESCO). Here are excavated also two sanctuaries belonging to the same period.

KOZARNIKA CAVE

Since 1984, archaeologists have been excavating this cave and have discovered numerous artifacts dating from the Early Paleolithic (1.4 million years B.P.) through the Late Paleolithic (11,500 years B.P.), evidencing human presence in Southeastern Europe that arguably include the earliest traces of Homo Erectus ever found on the European sub-continent. Findings include stone tools and bone remains of prehistoric game in the lowest sequences, up to the more finely crafted flint assemblages, bone tools and ornaments of Homo sapiens sapiens (modern man). The villa is situated not far from the famous Madara rider. It dated to the 1st - 4th centuries AD and consists of living part, farm buildings, Early Christian church and a pool - total 50 rooms. The villa is one of the most impressive monuments from the Antiquities in the region.

Marcianopolis

MARCIANOPOLIS

This is the biggest city in North-Eastern Bulgaria. The town is founded in the beginning of the 1st century by Emperor Traian (98-117) and is named after the name of his sister Marcia. Marcianopolis is spread on 700 decars and is build-up with streets orientated North-South and East-West. Here are discovered many important buildings - temples, amphitheatre, baths, basilicas.

NEOLITHIC DWELLINGS (STARA ZAGORA)

This unique archaeological museum presents two houses from the Neolithic age (VI millennium BC), who are the most preserved and with the most rich stock in Europe. In constant exposition "Prehistoric arts in Stara Zagora region" are showed standard from the Neolithic, the Stone-copper and the Bronze epoch, which are important certificate about high stage of development of economics and culture in our worlds through this early epoch.

Nicopolis ad Istrum

NICOPOLIS AD ISTRUM

The archaeological reserve of Nikopolis ad Istrum was the most remarkable city center in the inland of Misia district. The City of Victory was founded by Emperor Trayan in the beginning of 102 in honor of his victory over the Dacians. The remains of the archaeological reserve are situated at a distance of 18 km north of Veliko Tarnovo on the main road E85.

Nicopolis ad Nestrum

NICOPOLIS AD NESTRUM

Emperor Traian founds the town in 106 AD in honor to his victory in Dacians war. "Nicopolis" comes from the Greeks word "nica" and means "victory". The town flourish in the period 2nd - 4th centuries. Slavs destroy it in 577 AD.

The ancient Roman town of Nove is 4 km away from the town of Svishtov, and originated as headquarters of a Roman legion. Soon the territory around that military camp developed into a town settlement, which became a significant economic center.

OHODEN EARLY NEOLITHIC SETTLEMENT

For first time, in Europe here was found entirely preserved, open-ear settlement from Monochrome Neolithic period (6900-6800 BC). Structures and artifacts (buildings, flint and stone instruments, pottery) allow to make full reconstruction of life from that time.
During November 2004 was excavated a human grave. This is the oldest skeleton found in Europ belonging to the civilized society. The grave was taken entire from the earth and now is one of the exhibits of the Vratsa Historical Museum. Find a tour with thise site included HERE.


Perperikon

PERPERIKON

This fertile sheltered place had attracted settlers in very ancient times, and today, dozens of sites clustered around the natural hub of Perperikon reveal layer upon layer of archaeological remains. Thousands of years ago, Perperikon was a massive bald rock. Such rocks drew prehistoric humans like a magnet and became an object of worship. The rugged wilderness of the Eastern Rhodope must have cradled a rich megalithic culture long before the Thracian tribes inherited the land. The early inhabitants worshiped the huge undressed stones for their natural splendour. Later generations learned to carve and smooth the rocks and used them for shelter and protection. The old stone metropolis Pliska (7th century BC) is the first capital of Bulgaria. It is near the modern day city of Shoumen. It is in Pliska that Christianity became the official religion of the Bulgarians in 846. The most characteristic and interesting architectural monuments which have been preserved until these days are: the Great Elenska Basilica (the most stately Bulgarian temple of its time), the monastery with the metropolitan bishop palace where Tsar Boris III welcomed the disciples of the two brothers Cyril and Methodius (creators of the alphabet of the Slavic people, recognized as the patrons of Europe). SANDANSKI BISHOP'S BASILICA

The basilica dates to the Early Christian period (V-VI century) and is situated in the centre of the town. The basilica has gorgeous inner plastic decoration and floor mosaic. It also had a second floor with galleries. Beautiful frescoes, which imitate marble with floral ornaments, have been preserved on its southern wall. The combination of floral and geometrical ornaments have been found for the first time here.

SECSTAGINTAPRISTA

The town is situated on the main road through Danube River. From the gates of the stronghold come many descriptions that point the direction of this important communication thoroughfare. The first part of the name "sextaginta" means sixteen and the second - "prista" is the name of the sort military bouts. The name indicates the important role of the town as a port on the Danube River.

SOSTRA

The fortress "Sostra" is actually a Roman military post, built over the ruins of a Thracian settlement. Excavations begun just four years ago. In the fortress area were identified two towers, the headquarters, a storehouse for grain, the residences of the main officer and the lower rank officers, the barracks, the dwellings for the rest of the state officials and couriers, a graveyard and a network of streets. They are dated back to II - V cent. A.D.

TRANSMARISCA

A part of the northern castle wall with two four-cornered turrets and another part of the southern castle wall with a four-cornered and a cornered fan-formed turret are discovered during the archaeological excavations. The fortification is founded in the end of the3th century end exists till the beginning of the 7th century.

"UNATSITE" PREHISTORICAL MOUNT

This archaeological site is of great importance for the region. Because of the significant finds originated from this place, the prehistorical culture of South Bulgaria is named after its name - Unatsite. Since 2002 the site is excavated by Bulgarian-Greek expedition.

ULPIA OESCUS

The Roman town of Ulpia Oescus, in the northwest area of the village of Gigen, Pleven region, situated 5 kilometers south of the mouth of Iskar River (Oescus River in the past), is the most remarkable of the Roman and early Byzantine towns. The famous military road Via Trayana started here, following the Balkan Mountains Range crest, crossing the Balkans where the present city of Troyan is located and ending in ancient Philipoppolis, now the city of Plovdiv.
